Myrmecia Nigrocincta, AKA the “Jack Jumper Ant”, is a species of bull ant found throughout Australia’s east coast. This species is often known as Bull Ants or Jumping Jacks because they bounce around as a preventive measure when alarmed or provoked. The orange and black stripes on the body of these Myrmecia make them particularly appealing. Myrmecia possesses exceptional vision and will frequently follow you across the room. Because Myrmecia species posses a deadly sting and take awhile to mature from eggs to workers, I don’t recommend them for kids just getting started with antkeeping. Taking care of the necessities comes with patience and caution. Particularly when it comes to feeding and cleaning the outworld. Myrmecia are semi-claustral, meaning they need to be fed on a frequent basis while they are raising their first workers. The queens eat raw honey, maple syrup, fruits, and protein in the form of cricket legs throughout this time. I highly advise using a test tube and outworld from the start due to their size and aggressiveness. This makes feeding and cleaning easier, as well as providing a safe home for the queen to care for her brood.
