Notoncus, or Aussie Spine Ants, are a common but beautiful type of ant that can often be found nesting under logs or in open ground. They are often found in urban and suburban areas, generally in parks and other grassy areas. They are opportunistic eaters that will accept pretty much any type of food. They are very active all year round, and have minor nuptial flights throughout the year, though their major nuptial flights often happen during the winter.

The queens are medium sized compared to most of the ants I catch, clocking in at 7 millimeters in length excluding the antennae. They are fully claustral, though they love drinking sugar water and other sweet liquids. They also need loads of protein after their eggs hatch, so semi-claustral is actually a better category for them. They are somewhat hard to raise and take quite a bit of time to develop though, and so are not quite suited for beginners.
